Alphabetic Book Listings: M through R.

The list is sorted by author. If a book has no author it will be alphabetized by the first word in the title (excluding articles like A, An, The, etc.). Due to the extended length of the original Book List, it has been broken down into four pages, A to D, E to L, M to R, and S to Z.

Books will be identified as either hardbound or wraps in the description. Wraps copies can be either paperbacks or oversized softbound books.

Many of the author's names in these lists are links. Clicking on these names will bring up a separate Author Page. The Author Pages are where you will find the most information about books, including bibliographic data, content description, images of book covers, and even links to the author's websites, if available.

Martin, Simon. The Other Titanic. 1st printing. Newton Abbot: David & Charles. 1980. hardcover. isbn: 0715377558. scarcity: hard to find.

Story of the sinking of the White Star Line luxury liner Oceanic in 1914 and the salvage operation some 60 years later by the author and his partner Alec Crawford. The ship had sunk in shallow waters, but in an area of wild tidal shifts, and was considered unsalvageable until the author and his partner proved otherwise.

Not a book for the anti-salvage minded individual, although it might help to know the ship was literally torn to pieces after it sank and as such was just a massive pile of debree on the ocean floor.

The first American edition was published more or less simultaneously, also in hardcover, by David & Charles Publishers, North Pomfret, VT.

McCluskie, Tom. Anatomy of the Titanic. 1st printing. San Diego: Thunder Bay Press. 1998. hardcover. isbn: 1571451609. scarcity: hard to find.

This is an account of the design and construction of the great liner rather than yet another history of the sinking. The book is a detailed anatomy of everything from the a la carte restaurant to the watertight doors. It is a page by page tour of the ship. The book is profusely photo illustrated, mostly of Olympic since so few photos of Titanic ever had a chance to be taken. The text is somewhat dry, but the information on the ship is substantial.

According to people who are very involved with the ship’s specifications, however, there are a lot of errors in the captions for the photos. Apparently many items are misidentified, so reader beware.

McCluskie, Tom. Anatomy of the Titanic. 1st printing. Lon: PRC Publshing. 1998. hardcover. isbn: 1856484823. scarcity: fairly common.

The first British printing published more or less simultaneously with the American edition.

McCluskie, Tom. Ships from the Archives of Harland and Wolff the Builders of the Titanic. NY: Chartwell. 1998. hardcover. isbn: 078580949X. scarcity: common.

A fascinating look at the early designs of ships built by Harland and Wolff, which, as we all know, also built the Titanic. We did all know that right? Sure we did. For students of shipbuilding in the mid to late 1800s, as well as those interested in the development of the passenger liner from its earliest days, this book is a treasure trove. Plus it is a beautiful book, a work of art unto itself. These are actual working drawings, but beautifully rendered. The only downside is that the amount of useful information about each design is quite limited, no more than a few short paragraphs on each.

Mjåland, Arne. The Last Words About the Titanic Survivors. 1st printing. Valle: Setesdalsforlaget. 2004. hardcover. isbn: 8292441204. scarcity: very scarce.

This slender book contains obituaries, death notices and short newspaper accounts of some of the survivors of the Titanic disaster. The author has been collecting these notices for several years and has amassed a collection of 160 of them, but only 10 are included in this book, which was printed as a trial run to see if there is sufficient interest to go forward with a larger edition.

The people covered in this edition include Max Frolicher Stehli, Fredrick W. Scott, Edward John Buly, Reginald Hardwick, John Kennedy, Oberst Alfons Blumer Totentassel, Cathrine E. Crosby, E.M. Burns, C.H. Romaine, Oscar Palmquist and Edwin Kimball.

Aside from the author’s foreword and a page explaining the contents, the rest of the book is photocopies of newsprint articles and death notices. The accounts vary in length considerably. Some accounts are quite long, and contain interesting information, others are just a few paragraphs in length, and a few are extremely brief, no more than a sentence or two. Most of them are from English language papers, although a few are in foreign languages.

Even the shortest notices take up a full page of the book, as the author has just photocopied the entire page from that newspaper and put that in the book, as is. This seems wasteful of space and I would recommend some cutting and pasting so just the actual notice is in the book. There is no need for the rest of the newspaper page, as it has nothing to do with the subject. This would also free up a lot of wasted space that could be used to include many more obituaries.

The photocopies of newspaper articles don’t stand alone well, and I would like to have seen the author include some further text of his own giving some background about the people covered. This would be particularly helpful for those notices that are very brief. There is no need for anything significant, but basic details like whether they were passenger or crew, what age were they at the time of the disaster, etc. would help the reader understand something about who each person was.

The book is very nicely bound in a maroon cloth binding, although there is no title on the covers or the spine.

My initial reaction, which I told to Arne when he approached me about this project, is that there might be interest in this kind of book, but that the content needs to be significantly enlarged.

Parisi, Paula. Titanic and the Making of James Cameron. 1st printing. NY: Newmarket. 1998. hardcover. isbn: 1557043647. scarcity: common.

Asks the rivetting question of which was more massive, the Titanic or James Cameron’s ego. Don’t know the answer, but the inference is that nothing as insignificant as a 500,000 pound iceberg would have slowed Cameron down much. Okay, okay, actually the book is not about that at all. Well, not exactly.

Besides, Cameron’s dedication to the story, and commitment to his film are of equal size. This book traces the depth of his zeal to bring his vision to life. No matter what you think of Jack and Rose, Cameron’s film is the most accurate, the most awesome, representation of the Titanic tragedy to ever see celluloid.

Parker, E.W. Real Adventure Again. London: Longmans, Green & Co. 1937. hardcover. edited by W.T. Hutchins. A volume in the Heritage of Literature Series, Section A, No. 21. isbn: none. scarcity: very scarce.

A book by this author was published by the same company in 1934 with the title Real Adventure. It is listed as the Heritage of Literature Series, Section A, No. 1. Real Adventure Again is listed as No. 21 in the series, so I assume it is a second volume of additional adventures. But it is possible the 1937 book is merely an expanded or updated version of the 1934 edition.

In any event, Real Adventure Again contains a series of 12 short stories about real life adventures. Included are chapters on whaling and on Captain Scott’s expedition to name a few. It also includes a 19 page excerpt of Titanic related material from Charles Lightoller’s autobiography Titanic and Other Ships.

With thanks to Patty Miller for tipping me off to the Lightoller chapter in this anthology.
