Center Con

1983-1996

 

After Brian Peets put on a comic convention in Bellevue, WA in 1982, and decided not to do another one, Carl Waluconis and I decided to pick up the ball and put on our own show.   Carl had been one of the promoters of the old Sunday Con in the late 70s, and knew the ropes.  We both felt that the Seattle Center was the best location in the Seattle area – centrally located, easy to get to by bus or car, and everyone knew where it was.  Our convention name was our intentions – to put on our shows at the Seattle Center, which would be the best location for both the fans and the dealers.

 Over the next 14 years, from 1983 to 1996, 33 conventions, Center Con grew into the most successful show that Seattle had seen, at least, up until the advent of Emerald City Comicon in 2003 (Emerald City has grown into a huge show, far outstripping anything Center Con did).   Due to the economy in the comic book world, problems with the Seattle Center, the increased workload each show presented, and exhaustion, we decided to take 1997 off to rest up.    However, due to all these issues, and some personal issues that surfaced, we chose not to come back, and that was the end of Center Con.   However, all these years later, we still get requests to resurrect the show, from both customers and dealers who want a good old fashioned comic book show!

Thanks to my buddy Steve Sibra, and T. Andrew Wahl, we now have copies of the flyers for Center Cons 14, 15, 16, 21, and 24!   And we've found copies of the last two missing - 25 and 30!  All are displayed now in their correct years.
