Arnold and Betty Watson.

Watson, Arnold & Betty. Roster of Valor. The Titanic Halifax Legacy. 1st printing? Riverside, CT: 7 C’s Press. 1984. hardcover. with gift card from Titanic Historical Society laid in. isbn: 0911962506. scarcity: fairly common.

This is a very poignant little book. Its purpose is two-fold: first it is an alphabetical listing of the men and women who comprised the crew of Titanic; second it is a chronicle of the role Halifax, Nova Scotia played in the disaster’s aftermath. The crew list is alphabetized by name, and tells which department each person worked in as well as their home address. It also lists who survived, who did not. Four ships were sent out from Halifax to find the bodies of those who died on the Titanic, the Mackay-Bennett, the Minia, the Montmagny and the Algerine. The Mackay-Bennett found the bulk of the bodies that were recovered, over 300.

There is also a short chapter by Patrick Peters about the incredibly heroic work the engineering crew on Titanic did that night. No-one knew as well as they just how mortally wounded Titanic was, yet they stuck to their posts to the end ensuring there would be power for the lights and the wireless for as long as possible. None of them survived.

Winner of the Titanic Book of the Year Award for 1974.

Watson, Arnold. Titanic Crew List. Indian Orchard, MA: Titanic Enthusiasts of America. 1974. wraps. isbn: . scarcity: very scarce.

This crew list was originally printed for members of the Titanic Historical Society. Watson was the first to extensively research, correct and publish an updated list of the ship’s crew since the ones that were done for the investigations in 1912. Those original lists were done under a deadline, and without all the facts easily available resulting in quite a number of errors. Watson’s list forms the foundation for all the work carried on in the field to this day. In 1984, he came out with an updated and expanded book on this subject, Roster of Valor, The Titanic Halifax Legacy (see the previous listing).
