A ‘biography’ of Captain Smith based on fact but enhanced with imaginary characters and incidents. In other words, this is a work of fiction. The book is more a biography of Smith’s personal rather than his professional life, as his maritime career is given very little attention. Most of the major incidents in his career as a sailor are mentioned in the book, but they typically are glossed over quickly so the author can return to telling more about Smith’s private life ashore away from the great liners. So if you approach this book as a work of fiction about Captain Smith, the man, this is an enjoyable read, but if you are looking for the biography of a seaman, this book will disappoint.
