Garrett, Richard. Atlantic Disaster. The Titanic and Other Victims of the North Atlantic. 1st printing. Lon: Buchan & Enright. 1986. hardcover. isbn: 0907675573. scarcity: hard to find.

This book is an overview of mishaps at sea based loosely around the Titanic disaster. With chapters such as The Liner’s Story, The Iceberg’s Story, The Captain’s Story, etc., the author writes initially about the Titanic, then meanders off in many other directions. He bounces around quite a bit covering events from as early as 1854 with the sinking of the sidewheel steamer Arctic, to events as late as the 1960s. He even manages to get some airplane disasters as well as the Hindenburg in there.

The author’s writing style is light and fast paced. He has definitely mastered the art of the understatement. Even though his subject matter is often tragic, reading his book is fun. There is nothing new here, but he does cover a tremendous amount of ground - everything from the creation of icebergs to a short history of Marconi and his wireless. As a quick overview to disaster at sea from the dawn of the steamship era, this is a good work.

The American edition was apparently published by Seven Hills, Auburn, WA, also in 1986.
