A quick history of ships, shipbuilding and sea travel written for children. Covers sailing ships and steamers, as well as light ships, light houses, dredgers, even the Suez and Panama Canals. Although not a focus of the book, there is a lot of White Star Line material here including the launching of the Oceanic, and shipbuilding on the Olympic. Titanic is only mentioned a few times in passing as a terrible disaster. There is also some information on the Lusitania disaster.

The plates in this book are spectacular as well. One shows Olympic at sea, another Olympic being repaired after the collision with the Hawke. There is a plate of the building the Oceanic, another launching the Oceanic, yet another of the Belfast shipyards.

Over the years, Cooke wrote a number of books for children for the World at Work series. This is an omnibus edition which includes six of the books from that series. The most important for our purposes is that it includes A Day in a Shipyard, Cooke’s celebrated visit to the Harland and Wolff shipyards while Olympic and Titanic were under construction. Also included are his books about a coal mine, an iron works, a cotton mill, a woolen mill and leather working.

With thanks to Patty Miller for this one and for the cover image.
