Daniel Allen Butler.

Butler, Daniel Allen. Unsinkable. The Full Story of R.M.S. Titanic. 1st printing. NY: Stackpole. 1998. hardcover. isbn: 081171814X. scarcity: common.

A retelling of the Titanic story from the creation of the ship, to the disaster, aftermath, inquiries, and on up through modern dives to the wreck for exploration and salvage. Butler believes there has been too much revisionist writing on the subject in the last decade; he avoids this by attempting to explain the events of the disaster in the context of the cultural, political and historical realities of the world as it was in 1912.

The result is a hard-hitting account of the story. The author treats none of the characters with kid gloves. He has strong opinions on many of the issues, and states them clearly and objectively. I don’t necessarily agree with all his conclusions, but they are all well represented. Backing up his writing is one of the best documentation of references I have seen. There are extensive notes at the end of the book giving his sources.

This is the kind of strong, well documented book that the literature needs. Unsinkable belongs in your Titanic library.
