Bowyer was a harbor pilot with the Trinity House Pilotage Service in Southampton for almost 60 years. This book tells the story of his many years navigating ships in and out of Southampton harbor, roughly covering the years between the 1860s through the 1920s. Bowyer, of course, was the man who piloted Titanic out of Southampton on her maiden voyage. He was also in charge of the Olympic when she had her collision with the warship Hawke the year before.
