Simon Adams.

Adams, Simon. Titanic. 1st American printing. NY: DK (Dorling Kindersley) Publishing. September, 1999. hardcover. a volume in the DK Eyewitness Books series. children’s book. isbn: 078944724X. scarcity: fairly common.

The DK books are short, colorful editions for young readers which have proven to be very popular. There are over 100 titles in the DK series, and counting. Each chapter is quite short, usually just two opposing pages, with about a paragraph or two of text. All of the illustrations have lengthy captions though, so the amount of material covered is actually pretty extensive.

Although each section is short, a lot of ground is covered, from the building of the ship, the maiden voyage, the disaster and aftermath. Additionally, the discovery of the wreck in 1985 is covered as well as the treatment of the disaster in film over the years.

There are some issues with the text though. Some of the mistakes I saw were that the sliding glass windows on A deck were the only differences between Titanic and her sister Olympic; that single males in third class were berthed in a large dormitory in the bow, and that the collapsibles were stored upside down on deck.

Finally, there is my favorite booboo, and one which seems to sneak into what seems like every third book on the subject. Namely that the Titanic disaster was the first time SOS was ever used by a ship in distress. Actually, SOS was used for the first time three years earlier, in 1909, by the American steamer Arapahoe.
