Walter Lord's Titanic Books

Winner of the Titanic Book of the Year Award for 1955.

Lord, Walter. A Night to Remember. 1st printing. NY: Henry Holt. 1955. hardcover. isbn: none. scarcity: fairly common.

The most famous Titanic book of them all, and rightly so. Walter Lord single handedly kick started renewed popular interest in the disaster with this book, and with ebbs & flows, that fascination has continued to this day.

Lord’s book is full of information, a great deal of it from the words of the survivors themselves, as the author interviewed every survivor he could find. It is also enthralling to read, and ranks to this day as one of the best written books ever published on the subject. Right from the opening line the book just grabs you. Would there ever have been a renaissance in Titanic interest if not for this book?

I reread this book at least once a year, and am spellbound anew by it every time. If you haven’t read it in a while, give yourself a treat and pull it down from the shelf. You won’t be sorry.

Lord was not shy about autographing books, so you would expect signed copies to be a lot more abundant than they are. Apparently most of these copies have found their way into private collections, with the result that they are quite scarce in the open marketplace.

This new edition of Lord’s excellent book truly does stand out from the original edition, as it is packed with photographs and drawings. Now-a-days, extra illustrated books are common, but when this book was released there was nothing else like it available with such a wealth of images.

The first British printing of this book more or less simultaneously with the American edition by Allen Lane, London. hardcover.

Lord, Walter. Maiden Voyage. Article in American Heritage, December, 1955. NY: American Heritage. December, 1955. hardcover. isbn: none. scarcity: scarce.

This is a hardcover copy of the December, 1955 issue of American Heritage magazine. What makes the issue special to any collector of Titanic books is the ten and a half page article, Maiden Voyage. The first and last trip of the “unsinkable” Titanic, by Walter Lord. The article includes six and a half pages of text, and four pages of photo illustrations.

The article was written by Lord as an introduction to his book, A Night to Remember. It includes all original material in which Lord sets the stage, introduces some of the players, and ends with a classic cliffhanger ending just as Titanic strikes the iceberg. It is a wonderful companion piece to Lord’s equally excellent book.

Lord, Walter. The Night Lives On. 1st printing. NY: Morrow. 1986. hardcover. isbn: 0688049397. scarcity: common.

Lord’s sequel to A Night to Remember, written some 30 years after the original, and shortly after the wreck had been found. The book is full of new answers and even more questions amassed over the years he has been researching all aspects of the disaster since the release of his first book. He delves into many of the mysteries and riddles that Titanic readers have puzzled over for decades.
