Michael Davie.

Davie, Michael. The Titanic. The Full Story of a Tragedy. 1st printing. Lon: Bodley Head. 1986. hardcover. isbn: 037030764X. scarcity: hard to find.

Davie’s book is a solid retelling of the Titanic story. It is nowhere near as definitive as Geoffrey Marcus’ book as Davie goes for a much more focused look at the disaster. Davie concentrates on the major events of the story with an emphasis on the important players in the drama. Thus there is an entire chapter on Captain Lord of the Californian, another chapter on J. Bruce Ismay, and others on Guglielmo Marconi, on Senator William Alsen Smith, and on Lord Mersey.

Davie makes a genuine effort to be unbiased in describing the strengths and weaknesses of each of these men. He doesn’t pull his punches, but he does try to offer both sides of the story. The result is a well balanced look at the events and personalities involved. This title was published in the United States as Titanic,The Death and Life of a Legend. see the following listing.
