Letter written April 22nd 1912, reprinted in Voyage 69:
“Standing quietly about & being told by steward & stewardesses alike that '’It was only a precaution.' Rockets were being fired & then the call came for women & children to get into the boats & my husband & an officer handed my babies in & then myself. I was the last one to get into that boat excepting a baby who was taken from its mothers arms - was thrown to me whilst the poor mother was left shrieking on the deck. The boat was then being lowered & I could not help noticing the inefficient way in which it was handled & the stern being deep in the water before the bow was dropped.
Then it was discovered that there were [sic] no lamp on board & so a piece of rope dipped in oil had to do duty as a flare… A sailor found a piece of rope & some oil - by burning this we were able to keep near the other boats.
The steward who seemed to be in charge was addressed as 'Mr. Weeks’' [Wheat?] & he called out 'Pull up men, they’re singing in the other boats. Give them a shout!’' … I might add that there were men in our boat who had concealed themselves under the ladies skirts & had to be asked to stop lighting cigarettes as there was a danger of the dresses becoming ignited…”

Lifeboat 11 was known for having a man (Brice) who burned signals by dipping rope into oil.  Steward Joseph Thomas Wheat was in boat 11.  The woman left screaming on deck after her child was thrown in could have been Thamine Tannous, whose baby was likely in #11.
