Unknown newspaper, reprinted in the Journal of the Swiss Titanic Society: "Dr Stahelin said 'When Simonius and I saw this, we went into one of the least crowded boats, although we had no concerns as the Titanic seemed completely safe, the music was still playing and the crews maintained good discipline, although they did not show their excitement could hide. But nobody thought of the sinking of the big steamer, otherwise the places in the lifeboats would certainly have been filled quickly. The steamer had sunk quite low at the bow, and the engines were completely at a standstill, but the electrical lighting system was still working. Before the boats were lowered, some people came on deck who were provided with life belts, and now the ship's crew insisted that everyone should wear one. Also now stokers and other personnel came onto our deck and pounced on the lifeboats. But they were driven out by other crew. Our boats were then lowered and so we were soon down on the water level, where first the crew of the "Titanic" rowed away, followed by Simonius. me and some other men relieved.'" Dr Stahelin mentions a group of stokers who came on deck, while he and Simonius were on deck. A group of stokers was known to have jumped into lifeboat 3, as it was lowered, according to Margaretta Spedden; and Mr and Mrs Dick mentioned a push of people around boats 3 and 5. We know that Stahelin and Simonius were not in lifeboat 5, because Marguerite Frölicher says that the two men were rescued by the Carpathia around fifteen minutes after the recovery of lifeboat 5, in which she was rescued. While a number of members of the group felt that Stahelin was referring to the stokers around boat 3, others felt that the information was too imprecise to indicate a specific boat strongly, and we did not agree as to whether they were possibly in #3, or an unknown lifeboat. |
