What accounts we have are uncertain.

The Philadelphia Inquirer of July 31, 1912 says he "sprang into the first lifeboat he could reach, which happened to be the one in which Mrs. John Jacob Astor was a passenger".  It also says he is a Syrian who does not speak English very well.

According to the Minneapolis Tribune of June 2, 1912, Mr. Mamee knelt on deck and prayed along with Father Byles and others before leaping overboard and swimming to a lifeboat, where sailors attempted to beat him with oars before women interceded on his behalf and brought him on board the boat.

So did he swim to a lifeboat and climb in?  Was he in the lifeboat with Mrs. Astor?  We don't now, and neither account convinces us.
