From The Hampshire Independent, May 4, 1912:
He waited until the boat deck was awash, and then dived over.]
"'I saw the ship break in two,' he said, 'and the wave which she made as she went down sent me under. I came up near a raft on which 35 or 40 of us waited until we were rescued. We pulled Captain Smith on, but he was washed off. We pulled him on again, but he said, “Let me go boys,” and that was the last I saw of him.'"
