Los Angeles Times of April 21, 1912, Jessie Leitch interview: “Our boat was well manned and it was the eleventh to leave the vessel.” In Walter Lord’s papers is a transcript of Miss Leitch’s obituary, which stated, “The lifeboat was swung away from the side of the liner and was lowered into the water at 1.30am.” This launch time is consistent with boat 11. In the Dumfries and Galloway Standard and Advertiser of April 13, 1977, Nan Harper Pont stated, “I can remember now that it was the eleventh lifeboat to leave the ship.” Given how young she was in 1912, this is thought to have been something she was told later. Miss Leitch and her niece, Annie (Nan) Harper, were given a vote of 4.07 for boat 11 as there was no evidence indicating any other boat. |
