Johan Asplund, letter to his mother, May 24, 1912:
“We followed the crowd, and when
we got up there, the lifeboats were lowered and they
said that women should go first. The first boat was
lowered, and Einar (Karlsson) and I agreed that we
would go in the second. I entered but when Einar was
ready to enter he was boxed on the ear, and when I
saw that I jumped back up on deck….. When the next
to last boat had been lowered a bit, I decided to
jump. Einar agreed. When it was down 3 meters, we
jumped.”
The lack of any shooting near their lifeboat suggests
that the "next to last" lifeboat might possibly have
been boat #13 on the starboard side.
